As I’ve discussed in the past, planning a trip can be a daunting and long process. There are a lot of things to consider when planning flights, hotels and activities while you are traveling.
It is important to remember that there are a lot of things you should be doing before you even leave for your trip as well. If you do these things before you travel it will make your trip a lot less stressful and far more enjoyable.
These are # things you need to do before you leave for your next trip.
Get travel insurance.
Unfortunately, accidents happen and you can’t plan ahead for every scenario that could possibly happen while traveling. Add purchasing travel insurance to your budget for every trip. From lost luggage to emergency evacuation, travel insurance can help to save thousands of dollars down the road.
Make copies of your passport and important documents.
Make a few copies of your passport, credit cards and any other documents that are important and put them in multiple places in your bags and leave a copy at home with a family member or friend. An extra level of security would be to email a copy to yourself as well so you can always access your document no matter what happens.
Call your bank and credit cards.
Make sure to call or inform your credit cards or banks of your travel plans. This includes looking into foreign transaction fees. Consider getting a card that has low or non-existent travel fees to save money during your travels. For conversion rates, it is best to get the local currency in the country you’re visiting rather than trying to get your hands on cash before you go.
Research events and purchase important tickets in advance.
I don’t recommend planning every single aspect of your trip in advance but doing some research and having a list of attractions you’d like to see during your travels is important. Some shows or tours need advance purchase, so make sure to get tickets in advance for the important things.
Purchase adapters or converters.
Many countries not only have different sockets, but they have different voltages. It can be very annoying if on day one you plug in your hairdryer only to have it burn out from too much voltage. Convertors and adapters will be cheaper to purchase in advance as well.
Pack snacks and a change of clothes in your carry on.
Although we all pray and hope that our luggage will get to the destination with us, unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. If you pack an extra change of clothes you can alleviate some of the headache that can come with delayed luggage. Also, having snacks in your bag can take the stress out of a short layover or a long flight with less than appealing meals.
Depending on the country you’re visiting there may be requirements as far as vaccines but even just for your own health and safety it is important to get the proper vaccines for where you’re traveling. Many travel clinics and doctors will also prescribe you an antibiotic to bring with you in case of traveler’s diarrhea or common ailments.
